WILD STATUS
Vulnerable.
DISTRIBUTION
Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela.
SIZE
Adult males weigh around 2 kg females are slightly smaller at 1.7 kg.
HABITAT
Tropical rainforests of South America.
REPRODUCTION
A single youngster is born after a gestation of about 170 days and clings to the mother for the first couple of weeks, when the male or one of its siblings may also carry it.
DIET
Fruits, leaves, flowers, small birds and mammals.
INTERESTING TIDBITS
- The male and female look very different, females are all brown and males are black with a striking white face.
- They are monogamous and live in small groups of two to five.
- Very shy in the wild.
- Make bird-like chirping sounds.
- They are vulnerable due to the destruction of their habitat by humans. They are also hunted for food and for the pet trade.
